2023-2024 COMMUNITY EVENTS
Blanket making with Project Linus May 8th, 2024
Our annual Project Linus community event is coming up on Wednesday May 8 from 1:30-3pm at the lunch tables at Alta Vista. Parents and children are welcome (young children should have a parent/guardian present), and space is limited. Please email Claire Kalia to sign up at clairekalia@gmail.com.
Update
We had a good turnout for our Project Linus event, with parents and kids working together to make no-sew fleece blankets for local kids and babies who are unhoused, in hospital and otherwise in need of some extra warmth and comfort. In just over an hour we made a total of 18 beautiful blankets. Many kids and parents said they are excited to come back next year and make more!
Alta Vista Cares: Thanksgiving Food Drive November 6-20th, 2023
Alta Vista partnered again with the Cupertino De Anza Lions Club in its community-based Thanksgiving food drive to provide 180 boxes filled with Thanksgiving food items for local families experiencing hunger or need this holiday season. Families helped by donating non perishable items, sponsoring a family and providing them a Thanksgiving dinner through a $50 donation, and volunteering to help the weekend of the food drive.
Update
Thank you for your support in providing much-needed food items to local families this Thanksgiving.
We raised over $3K in family sponsorships and also collected enough food items to fill not 180 but 350 boxes full of food items to local families. In addition, we filled an SUV (to the brim!) with extra food items for the Watsonville farm worker families.

Alta Vista Cares: Flood Victim Assistance
Please join the Alta Vista community in a drive for much-needed supplies for the victims of the flooding in the Pajaro and Watsonville areas. From April 19-28, we will be collecting the following:
- Clothing, kids or adults, new or used in good condition
- Blankets, new or used in good conditions
- Gift cards to Target or Safeway * these are critically needed *
- Hand-written notes of support and encouragement - ideally written by our Alta Vista students
Please drop off the clothing and blankets in the bins outside the cafeteria, and please drop off the cards and gift cards to Ms. Salina in the office.
Thank you for your support of this vulnerable population. If you have any questions, please reach out to Claire Kalia, AVHSC VP of Community Service, at clairekalia@gmail.com.
Update
Thank you for your kindness during our Donation Drive to support the Pajaro area flood victims. We collected bags and bags of clothing and blankets, and we also had many student notes and cards and a generous amount of gift cards. All of your contributions will be delivered this week to Pajaro Valley Shelter Services which extends its gratitude to the Alta Vista community.

Update
On Saturday, Alta Vista hosted a Project Linus blanket making event. Twenty-five students, families and alumni worked together to make 27 beautiful blankets that have already been delivered to Project Linus. Everyone enjoyed being a part of such a wonderful project. Thanks to the Alta Vista Home and School Club for sponsoring this important event.
Alta Vista Cares: Help Alta Vista Feed Local Families this ThanksgivingAlta Vista is partnering again with the Cupertino De Anza Lions Club in its community-based Thanksgiving food drive to provide 170 boxes filled with Thanksgiving food items for local families in need and migrant farmworker families in the Watsonville area. Here is how you can help.
UpdateThanks to your support of our Thanksgiving Food Drive. Not only were we able to feed 170 local families, but we were also able to provide over 50 turkeys and many boxes of non-perishable items to Watsonville farm workers.
Alta Vista families and teachers alone sponsored 26 families and provided lots of donations of dry goods for our boxes. We also had volunteer support from Alta Vista families throughout this weekend and today as we gathered the donations, sorted and boxed, and delivered them to the recipients.

Alta Vista Cares: Toiletry, T-Shirt, and Sock Drive
Alta Vista's fall community service drive kicks off October 3 and runs through October 14. We are collecting socks, T-shirts and hygiene items for the unhoused community in the downtown San Jose area. Please drop off any new or gently used adult-sized socks and T-shirts and all kinds of hygiene items (shampoo, soap, body wash, face cloths - hotel-sized toiletries are welcome too) to the box outside the cafeteria any time between October 3-14. The items will directly benefit the most vulnerable in our community, so please contribute all you can.
For more information on our partner agency, please visit od2020.com.
Questions: email Claire Kalia: clairekalia@gmail.com
Update
Thank you for showing how much you care with your generosity and donations during our first community service project of the year. The toiletries, shirts, and socks will make life a little nicer for those in need.
