Alta Vista's Garden
Our garden has been replanted recently. Stop by and take a look. Thank you Mari and John our AV Garden Club Lead Volunteers.
Thanks to the efforts of parents John Van Kirk and Mari Jozaki, Alta Vista's Garden Club has been reborn. Classes can arrange to visit the garden or even have their own planter box.
This year, 11 classes signed up to plant in the garden (Kinder, 1st and 3rd)—hooray!
Please come by the garden and check out the new signs to see what was planted. We installed 2 new garden beds last month. :)
In addition, here are some of the other things we've been up to:

Planted and harvested a winter spinach crop

Planted two new trees for the students to enjoy

Pruned all trees and plants

Repaired the irrigation

Started composting
This Spring we are focused on increasing our parent and student participation at our meeting up days. Teachers are already booking Spring visits and have we have additional teachers who have expressed interest in planting next Spring.

Alta Vista Garden Club Update
We have had a busy spring at the AV Garden Club! AVHSC would like to thank our Garden Club leads, John Van Kirk and Mari Jozaki for making the garden look fantastic! Also, we would like to give a shout-out to the extended care program for donating the kid's playhouse that is now in the AV Garden for the little ones to enjoy.
Here is a quick recap of our last few events.
- Feb 25th AV Garden Winter Cleanup Day: Our AV Garden Club children and adult volunteers prepared the garden for spring planting season. We did some weeding, ground cover restoration, fixed the wobbly bench, repaired damaged planter boxes, and planned out the final stages of our irrigation extension.

- March 24th: Tanya Yates's 1st & 2nd-grade class planted native CA wildflowers that Monarch Butterflies are attracted to.
- March 24th: Debbie Arrieta's 1st grade class planted native CA wildflowers that attract honey bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.
- April 20th: Julia Pugliese's Kindergarten class planted native CA wildflowers that honey bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies are attracted to, along with cherry tomatoes, an artichoke plant, salads, carrots, and snap peas.
- April 27th: Nikki Grist's Kindergarten class planted native CA wildflowers that honey bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies are attracted to, along with cherry tomatoes and strawberries.
- May 4th: Christine Barbara's Kindergarten class planted native CA wildflowers that honey bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies are attracted to, along with cherry tomatoes (golden and red), peppers, and basil.
Upcoming Garden Activity
There will be one more AV Garden Club Cleanup/Fun Day this year. The garden leads have a few projects planned for that day, but the most exciting one is that we will be putting up signage to let people know what is planted in each bed along with a "Garden Activity Sheet" for young ones to fill out, color, and take home with them after visiting the garden.
